Eloika Lake June 2

Post by Lotech Joe » Fri Jun 01, 2007 6:10 am

I'm heading up to Eloika this Saturday, for the first time in maybe 14-15 years. Does anyone have any pointers on this lake? Any reason you can think of that fly fishing with steelhead flies wouldn't work? Any and all help is much appreciated.

Assuming you are fishing bass.

If you go in at the public access off of Oregon rd;
Start off left of the boat ramp and work along that east side all the way down to the south end of the lake.

If you put in at jerry’s landing (pay to launch) then head for the island and work all the way around it. And then head up to the north east corner back in that slough.

I have caught a lot of big bass at the south end. A lot of guys will say they have caught big ones on the north end.
The truth is there are nice fish all over the lake. If you haven’t been there in 15 years you may have a coronary when you see how much the weeds have taken over. Even in the past 5 years, the lake is WAY different then when I was growing up out there. If you go to Jerry's landing go in and talk to him, he is a nice guy. Don't forget to check out the pics on the wall of all the BIG bass that have come out of there!

If you are targeting brown trout I have had really good success in and around the boat launch on Oregon, right where the creek comes in.

Can’t help you on fly selection – I guess just see what is hatching and try to match it. The only bass I have caught on a fly have been on poppers.

Large flies work in this region for Kams but I believe this lake is known more for warmwater species.

:thumright I fished Eloika today, June 2, and had a great day. It was way too weedy for fly fishing leeches or wolly buggers, but Berkley's Gulp worms in a Tripple Marguarita color worked well on spinning geat without weight. I caught one 10" Crappie, 3 small eater LM Bass and a really nice 17 1/2" Bass. Started fishing at 5:15 AM and came off the lake at 12:15 PM. I posted a report for Eloika if you're interested. What a great day. I will fish Berkley's Gulp again.
