No Dick Nite Spoons at Cabelas

Post by Jake Dogfish » Sun Apr 27, 2008 7:21 am

Just an FYI for anybody who doesn't want to waste time driving down there. (45 mins for me)
I was even dumb enough to think I was going to find a particular color. #-o

I asked the Salesman, he quickly said he would ask the Manager when they were getting them in. The Salesman sounded like he was asked this question every 5 minutes.
He asked the Manager if the Dick Nites had been ordered. The Manager said he did not know anything about that. :shaking:

That sucks.....I put these things right up next to the Kastmasters.
I would hit Sportmans Warehouse.... They're cheaper too.

Yeah, your exactly right. They were on sale for like 1.79 or something.
I was going to order through the Dick Nite website, but they cost $3.57 each!

Cabelas is probably one of the worst places to buy DNs and corkies. Their prices for those things will be/are through the roof.

If you are looking for the 50/50 chrome and brass dick nite, I see a bunch at Big 5 and Fred Meyer, while I seem to see less at GI Joes or other tackle stores. So, go to the other smaller stores. For other dick nite colors, just use some spray paint if you can't find the right color.

I am a huge fan of the Dick Nite spoons. I buy them at the Sportsman's Warehouse for I under 2 bucks each. The one I use most often and exclusively at Cranberry Lake is the one in the pic. Great lures I would dot do without. Good to hear Cabala’s in store inventory was less than impressive. I was thinking of visiting the store but it's a long drive for me so thanks to your info, I will pass.

Cabelas doesn't have a lot of the items we have in our tackle box for local fishing. They came from the midwest and have items that are used there which can carry over into our fishery. Most of their prices are more than Sportsman Warehouse and Joes's.
I just got some 50/50 Dick Nites at Joe's in Puyallup on sale ($1.67) last week. I had to look but I also picked up that green specked one but haven't got to fish yet.

I love the selection for poles and reels at Cabelas. I went there looked at the reels, figured out which one I wanted and went to Sportmans Warehouse and bought it. It was $10.00 cheaper.

Cableas has a better selection on clothes. I have bought 2 coats from them.
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

IMHO

Cabelas is ok if you live in the general area. But not so much to purchase goods, they carry some stuff that may be hard to find else where but that seems to be about it. For me personally,I'll go down there on occasions just to show my 2 year old the aquarium(we both enjoy looking at the fish)but when it comes to the pocket book, its Joes and Sportmans Warehouse.

+1 on that comment.
It's an experience, but for me to make a 1 hour drive to find an odd assortment of tackle and usually bad prices, it's not worth it.

I still love all the east coast saltwater fishing gear they still have....

Yep, you guys are all right. I will know better next time.
I really did enjoy the selection.

But like Sam said, who needs 30 different colors of some lure you never heard of and were never going to buy anyway?

I was at the Cabelas in Reno a couple months ago and selection-wise the two stores were more or less identical with what they carried. You'd think a company as big as Cabela's could afford to hire a consultant or two for each area they're opening a store at to see what the locals buy. As it is right now I will always go to Sportsman's Warehouse over Cabelas. I wonder if anglers will open up to the salestaff at Cabelas when fall salmon season rolls around, like they do at Sportsman's, about what colors are working, what the river flows have been like, etc.

Cabelas has a LOT of inventory. Its just NOT NW specific as much as some would like. Over time they will handle more NW items. Remember that it took a year for Sportsmans Whse to get in a good selection of westside stuff. Also Cabelas pricing is usually full retail on fishing tackle. The only things that I've seen discounted were really ugly stuff. They always do seem to have deals on outdoor clothing.

Amen, brother. Like many great ideas or businesses, they try to do too much sometimes and end up with a lot of pretty good, but nothing exceptional. I would think the Post Falls store, for example, could do less with the huge inventory of big water gear and maybe shift a percentage of floor space to more "local" pursuits like inland freshwater lakes/rivers. Obviously a store on the west side might see a shift in the percentage to include more large-species and open water fishing inventory.

I do like their stores though, when I take my girls (3 & 6) we call it "Daddy's Toy Store" and they get a kick out of the displays. We typically head straight to the back of the store to the Bargain Cave (or whatever they call it) and work our way back toward the front. For me it's about 5 miles either way to Cabela's or the valley mall Sportsman's, but I usually hit SW for the prices.

When Cabelas came into Post Falls Idaho, a few minutes from Spokane, I was impressed, and surprised, by a lot of things. I still find that Cabelas has more of what I need, but I'd be in trouble if Sportsman's was not also in the area. I find that Joe's is pretty lame in Spokane.

What I was told when I asked the General Manager of our Cabelas, about just this issue of not having what we need, was that the store buying profile was based on the Boise Idaho store. I believe that the Reno store, and all of the other western states stores, is also based on the oldest of the west stores, which is think is the Boise store. He told me it would take two to three years before a new profile was developed; a profile based on local request and buying.

For you guys on the "Left Coast", I expect Cabelas to be a disaster. Cabelas has never carried much in the way of Steelhead of Salmon, and what they do carry is mostly the Great Lakes version of those items. Their Steelhead, Salmon, and Trout selections are improving, but it is not going to happen overnight.

Before Cabelas came to town, the Sportsman's and Joe's prices were higher. I agree, they are lower now, but only because they lowered them to keep their doors open. There are days when Joe's has no one in the parking lot other than employees. I have seen Sportsman's with a similar, but not as extreme, problem. Cabelas will always tie their prices into their catalog, so Sportsman's an Joe's do have opportunities to sell lower, and I for one look forward to the competition.

So there is some hope for the Lacey store. I would love to see a Bass Pro shop in the general area. The spirit of competition would be a great bonus for us fishing/hunting consumers. I went to Cali and stopped by BPS...and just like a little kid,I bolted to the aquarium.:-$

I'm really not too terribly impressed with Cabela's at all. They are expensive, have a poor selection, and their employee's all seem like wal-mart type employees. They don't know anything. "Uhh, lets look at it on the website and I'll see if we have any." You better know what you want when you go there, don't bother asking for advice.

I went today for 3 main things; a new trolling motor, an oxygen/temp meter, and a new reel. They had none of them in stock. No idea what the oxygen meter was, didn't know if/when they'd get the reel I wanted, and same with the TM. They suggested I order it online...Why have a local store?

If I need to order online, I'll use BPS, I don't pay taxes and they are usually a few bucks cheaper.

That's because big stores like Cabelas and Walmart just want to hire all their employees as "part-time" employees so they don't have to give them all the benefits and training that a full time employee would require...
