Best line to use

Pound for pound what is the best line or your favorite brand of line that you use? On my Salmon/steelhead rig I use fireline. On my lighter I use stren mono. How about you?

I have several fly lines, two Orvis floating lines and two Scientific Angler Wet Cell sink lines (Type IV) that I use most often. I keep a Cortland VII sink line handy for those warm, late Spring days when the trout are real deep. The mono on my spinning rods is Stren Magnathin. I'm sure none of these line types is the "best" but they serve me just fine!

I usually fish Maxima almost exclusively for everything, but I just tried Shakespeare Cajun Line and love it. I decided to try the Cajun Line because it was only like $5.99 for a 1,600 yard spool, and I figured what the heck. I bought it in 8# test to put on my humpy rod last weekend and I landed well over 30 humpies in the river using it. I like it because it does not have very much memory and seems to be a lot thinner than other 8# lines that I have used. It almost seems to be equivelent to 6# test, but has the strength of 8. It seemed harder than normal to break off when I was hung on the bottom compared to other equal lines.

I'm also having good luck witht the Cajun Red. I bought it because it was cheap and I found out that it does seem to dissappear under water. I like that! So I'm using it on my trolling rod with an Okuma line counter reel. On my 5 weight fly rod, I'm hard pressed to use anything but a WF5F Cortland Peach. That line has treated me well for 2 years now.

Can't stand Maxima for spinning reels...Stuff's heavier then lead but it's a good line for my levelwind salmon reels...

There's a reason why 90% of my reels got P-Line on it....That stuff's the best I've ever tried...

Trilene is garbage, never get near that stuff, but I will throw some Stren on some of my spinning reels occasionally...

For spinning reels, I like Vanish.

For my baitcasters, I have fallen in love with P-Line after being a devoted Trilene fan for decades.

Any major brand will do the job. Stay away from the cheap stuff. 1000yd spool for a buck is no deal.

I also bought some Cajun red to try it out because of the price, and it works pretty well. I love leaded line for trolling for trout. Vanish or any fluorocarbon make great leader. Berkely big game works really well for a cheap price. I cant stand braid. Bought stren 1 time, and I wont even use that stuff for leader. Trielene is on most of my poles.

A lot of great answers above. Of course you knew we would each have there own favorite lines.

Mono - Dymel (probably spelled wrong, but it is s Cabela's inported product), Suffix, then P-Line, in that order.

Superlines on my Bait Casting - Power Pro.

Fly Lines - I like my Air Flow for my dry line, but Cortland 555 and Scientific Anglers Products are excellent for both sinking and dry (floating) lines.

I guess you need to tell us what you would be using the lines for. After all, lines are just tools, and there is no one tool that is right for every job.

Since we're on this thread, I have a question about braid lines. On my flipping stick I have braided line and it works well for heavy duty applications.

However, my son picked up a spool of Spiderwire 20lb braid that has the diameter of 6lb mono. I would like to put it on one of my spinning rods. My questions are:

1. Does braid work OK on a spinning reel?

2. The pole I plan to use is rated 6-12lb and is a quality IM8 graphite rod. Does the line size rating apply to the castability issues or will I bust it up on a hookset because the braid doesn't stretch transfering all the energy to the rod?

3. Does anyone out there use braid on a spinning rig and how does it or did it work for you?

I had braid on a spinning real (I actually just took it off yesterday). I would use it for bass fishing and salt water fishing. It worked pretty well on a spinning rod but not as good as mono. I didnt want to take the line off but with all the pinks coming in I need some extra poles to take people out fishing and braid is a little tougher for them. Mostly because you have to tie on a leader, but you dont always need added weight, so you end up reeling the swivel through your first guide.The braid also chewed up the first guide on my ugly stick. Your pole wont break on a hook set, but I have seen them snap poles trying to get a snags undone. I just carry a leather work glove, wrap the line around my hand and pull the snag until it comes undone. I also carry a glove while pier fishing so I can hoist a fish up that way too. But I realized you can just cast the hell out of braid. I really cant stand braid, but its always good to have a reel spooled w/ it just in case.

A friend put me on this and it P-line CXX. This stuff is great. I use the 6 and 8 pound. I just got the 8 the other day to use for Humpy fishing and when I got hung up it tkaes quite a bit a strength to snap it.
