Live bait replacements

Post by ragibby » Fri Dec 13, 2013 2:11 pm

I've never been a huge fan of live or real baits (ie eggs, shimp ect) and sense I've been reading about steelhead a lot I've learned that eggs and shimp are some go to baits for some of you guys.

I'm usually a huge jig guy but sometimes those don't always work. I recently picked up some ez-eggs to try out this weekend with a little yarn and scent.

So let's hear it. What are some good artificials that you've used in the past and have had success with. What's the best artificial egg?? What's the best artificial shimp??

Are you looking for artificial baits for just steelhead or artficials in general? Scented or unscented? The topic is a bit wide open without a few qualifiers thrown into the mix. I will say this, I have not found an effective artificial bait replacement for shrimp, ghost/sand/coon or otherwise. The fake shrimp products that are sold don't smell like shrimp, they are just pressed and formed into shrimp like shapes, but they nothing like the real thing. Best bet for imitating shrimp, is to use scent on your gear.

Soak some yarn in shrimp or egg oil. Try some of the power bait plastics. Unfortunately, I have to tell you that none of the artificial baits will replace the real thing. There's a reason people have been curing roe for decades. Because it works.

The best egg substitute/replacement i've found is soaking yarnies in pautzke's nectar. Like the others said, i haven't seen an artificial shrimp that would work better than a jig with some pro-cure shrimp scent on it. In all honesty, in my opinion, working with bait (especially shrimp tipping jigs) is less of a hassle than trying to carrying a bunch of stuff to imitate bait. If i don't have eggs or don't feel like bringing some, i cut up a 2 or 3 shrimp into pieces and soak those in pautzke's nectar or the juices i have leftover from curing eggs, works great.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.
