Jens/Donman,

I saw a guy wade across the rocks to the island. I wouldn't recommend it, but they are catching more there it seems. They just cast ino the channel and let the bobber drift back to them. But even on that side there is only one fish caught per 6 guys per 6 hours of fishing. Can't deny that they are there, but with all those people no one seems to have the magic recipe for catching them. I think a couple of lucky lottery winners walk out with fish. There is nothing that the catchers are doing different from the fishers. It does get frustrating.

I wouldn't wade across to the island either, but it looks like you would have a better chance there. I saw more fish jumping there than they were closer to us. That's why you have friends with boats :) BTW how long is this run supposed to last? And I thought this run was supposed to be the mother load, I guess I missed it.

When I went up to the Bogachiel in december, I knew I was in the right spot when I saw everyone hooking into Steelhead. No one came out empty handed, and the hatchery creek was stacked with steelhead. I am just not seeing this with the Cowlitz. But hey I'm a noob trying to learn as much as I can.

The "mother load" was up the columbia. Some of the tributaries off the columbia got more then others. I know of a river that at the peak of the run had 8000 fish a day hit the ladder. Its just too far for me to go. We had talked about going there then mapped it all out. Only if Im staying multiple days would I go that far. BC was good to me and my family. We got Multiple fish on many outings. Right now though is a betweener for the steelies. Few darkies in there and a few lost summer runners comming a lil early. Should pick up again close to the 1st of june or so around there. Get there in that 2 week period that they are thick. Hit it as many times as ya can then. Snooze and loose.
More fish please!

I look forward to fishing those OP rivers this upcoming winter. I think you just missed out when you have fished the Cow. Our innercircle has done extremely well, and we weren't fishing.......:-$ :-k

:pale: I wish I was part of the inner circle, just not in the middle of it #-o

But yeah the OP has been really fun this year. Can't wait for this next season of Winter Steel hitting the Bogey.

Is the Bogi just a corky/yarn show? Fresh report from "TIC"- 4 springers caught at Barrier before 9am :-$

From the Hatchery where all the bankers hang out - yes. I mean you can def use a bobber and a jig, or spinners. But what I saw mostly was the good old corky and yarn.

Scott, is a maniac on the river. Can't wait to go out fishing with you again Scott.

At the Bogey, when they are running, you can throw anything out there and they hit. Only corkies, only yarn, a line with no hook. It seems that the 3 fish limit can be reached in a matter of an hour or so and the 8hr round trip would have been totally worth it.

I'm mainly a boat & salt water guy, but after a slow blackmouth season I'm antsie and got Springer fever and booked some camping spots at the Yakima Sportsmens State Park right outside Yakima. Will Springers be up that far or anywhere in the area the weekend of 5/21-5/23, or should I look for some camping spots further down? Appreciate any suggestions/recommendations!

From the WDFW weekender:
Southcentral Washington

Fishing for spring chinook salmon is closed from the mouth of the Columbia River to McNary Dam, but anglers are catching an increasing number of springers in the Yakima River.

Paul Hoffarth, WDFW district fish biologist from Pasco, reports that an estimated 20 hatchery spring chinooks were harvested in the lower Yakima River during the week ending May 9. In addition, eight wild chinook were caught and released. Anglers averaged 39 hours per chinook, up slightly from a year ago.

Creel reports indicate an estimated 225 adult hatchery marked (clipped fin) spring chinook were harvested at Ringold for the week of May 3-9. An estimated 44 wild chinook were caught and released. WDFW staff interviewed 166 anglers, 18 percent of the effort during the week. Anglers averaged one chinook for 17 hours of fishing, eight hours better than a year ago. For the season, 301 hatchery steelhead have been harvested.

Hoffarth reminds anglers that, because of budget cuts, this will be the last spring chinook fishery at the Ringold. It will remain open for hatchery steelhead and other species.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
