Upper Columbia Rainbow Trout

Post by Mike Carey » Mon Aug 17, 2009 4:59 pm

I know this is cross-posted, but I wanted to make sure the fly guys got to check out this video. I caught some footage of an amazing caddis hatch where we had huge rainbows slurping insects all around us. If you are looking for a trophy rainbow trout destination in Washington I think this qualifies!

Hey Mike, what's the deal? Everytime you head out for video with a guide it rains. How are we going to break this jinx????

keeps me from drying out, LOL. When we came up that evening we were treated to a way cool lightning show, almost worth the tough fishing the next day. You can see how tired I was by how sloppy the summary I did was. Kept stumbling over my words. I was dog tired. Justin had us out all evening (not complaining, I'd do it again in a heart beat). I'll tell you what, Aaron caught the best fish of the day in the dark right across from the Laze-Daze B and B. Couldn't get a good video shot of it. I had a fish at dusk just slam my fly. Wasn't ready for it and off it went.

Hey Mike,
It's nice to see you with a fly rod in hand.
Where you go is less important than how you get there.

thanks, had fun making it and keeping it in the 10 minute YouTube limit, ouch.

Joe, I was a little worried about my skills for casting a dry fly to these fish. I have to give credit to Justin, he noted a few adjustments for me to make and I actually got my line out far enough to catch fish. I'll tell you what though, watching Justin cast was something else. The guy knows how to lay out a dry fly! I just don't do it enough to develop those kind of skills.

Mike,

In a previous life I was a fly fisherman. Only a fly fisherman. To this day the upper columbia is the only fly fishing I still do on an annual basis. I was taken up there for the first time by a famous fishing college basketball coach in exchange for a trip I had taken him on earlier in the year. I fish it with him as often as I can and it is unquestionably the best trophy rainbow spot in this state and possibly in the North West. The first fish I ever hooked on that river took me to my arbor knot in minutes. Glad you had the chance to experience it.
