What does a Bass Bed Look Like?

For those that know, a description would be greatly appreciated and better yet a picture.

Are the beds made in sand? Gravel? rock? Do smallie beds differ from LMB beds?

Thanks!

I don't think I'd personally target bedding bass but that I suppose is fodder for a different thread.

The simple answer is that the bed looks like a lighter colored patch about two feet in diameter on the bottom. The bass use their fins to fan away silt and expose a hard bottom to lay their eggs on.

all bass beds are in an area that gives the fish food and from deep to shallow water the male bass stays on bed not the female she will stay around 15-25 feet away waiting for the right time to spawn and a bass bed most of the time will have some type of cover even a flag pole "seen it" and the size of the bed is the length of the fish on bed I have seen 7in-3' beds in wa. try not to catch the bass on bed go for the big one the male gives away her location if you stay just to where you can see him he will look her way.

Smallies bed don't really look different from Largies, just usually the location. Largies bed in the back of low wind areas and somewhat shallow. Smallies will bed on the edge of a drop off, can be pretty deep.

I think he is saying that larger males make larger beds and they bed near the security of deep water or cover. The male makes and guards the bed while the female (which is usually larger than the male) lurks around the vicinity of the bed but not on it while she waits to drop her eggs. I have never seen a male give away the location of the female but sometimes she will show up out of nowhere if he isn't aggressively defending the bed.

Hope that helps.

I used to fish a dock on a crystal clear private lake that always had a bed by it every year and you could observe this behavior. The Male would stay right on the Bed and every once in awhile the HOG female would cruise by...

When looking for beds stand up and wear good polarized sun glasses. You must be in areas that you can see the bottom.... What to look for is off colored areas about 3' or so in diameter. On a nice calm day is the best..... Remember if you can see the fish it can see you! They are very protective of their spawning area and any little fish or plug or worm etc will tick them off and they will attack..... Good luck and be patient!

Believe it or not, but I have located some beds while out yesterday. I even saw some cruizing largies. There was evidence of a few beds in this particular area. No fish staying on them yet, but definitely clean beds!
