So I have never been to this lake before, I am new to fly fishing, and I have a new pontoon boat, so just in case I brought my spin cast rod as back up. I showed up to the lake at noon and talked to an angler just getting done for the day. He said he limited and he was trolling power bait. So I figure that was a good sign that the lake has fish and they are biting.
The lake was calm and it was probably around 70 degrees outside with little to no wind. Perfect conditions for fly casting. I really wanted to fly fish so I tried fly fishing for about two hours trying various nymph patterns and streamers ranging from brown, olive, and black. After two hours of fly fishing and no action I decided I would try power bait still fishing. So I tied up a standard 3ft leader and a slip weight with a size 10 egg hook and 4lb test with some power bait and cast out and still nothing for probably another 30 minutes. Now... I have never trolled power bait before, but I thought.... maybe the guy I talked to at the launch knew something I didn't, and maybe if I troll this power bait I have on I will get some rod bending action. So I reel in my power bait and cast it out and start rowing. About 15 seconds later I have a fish on. I limited out in about 30 more minutes with rainbows averaging about 14" by trolling power bait.
