Paddled my yak out on the big lake for a few hours of early season fishing before last years license runs out; that's my excuse anyway. Launched from Coulon and spent two hours getting blown all over the south end of the lake; I forgot my anchor. I truly enjoy being able to fish the many shallows and holes scattered about this part of the lake WITHOUT THE WEEDS! Unfortunately... it seems most of the fish are still hanging out in deeper water... I was skunked with various rigs. I imagine that the perch will move back in as the water warms up... about the same time the weeds return.
On the way back to the car I stopped to rest and ditch the wind for a while by the large steel breakwaters that are submerged next to the Boeing plant. The water was fairly calm... I couldn't resist dropping a worm under a slip bobber with about 12' leader as a last ditch effort to save the day. I hooked and partially landed what was at least an 18" rainbow; it bounced and slipped the hook while basically in my lap. A net would have saved the day... alas... at least I got the adrenalin pumping for a few minutes.
Well... that was about the size of my day. I'll definitely be back soon. One note... the water depths vary greatly down there. Aside from the dredged-out path leading directly up to the Boeing dock... there are many shoals and and underwater obstacles to be wary of along the south end. Happy fishing
