My son and I fished from 4:45 am to 9:45. At 5 am we observed a nice bite with several boats pulling in fish. We had no strikes. At 8 am a second bite occurred. We lost one due to a release malfunction on the downrigger. At 8:10 we had a hit but the fish came off. At 8:20 we lost a wild one as the fish came back on us and cut the line on the downrigger cable. At 8:40 we caught a 4-5 lb fish on black 3/0 hook at 60 feet on the rigger. Another bite at 9:00. Caught our second fish at 9:35 on a red 2/0 hook at 60 feet on the rigger.
These sockeye are just a riot to catch! The fish we caught would hit light, but when free of the downrigger would come straight to the surface and tail-walk or just take off like a bolt of lighting. I mean these fish are by far the fastest salmon I've caught. If we get to fish next week I would recommend giving this fishery a try. It was great fun!
