Well the final day of the sockeye season was a repeat of yesterday. My son and I hit the water at 6:15 am and fished off the SW corner of Mercer Island. We saw a few caught but had no strikes until 7:55 when we got our first strike. We lost the fish when the leader broke. We landed a nice 5 lb. fish at 8:20, 60 feet on the rigger with a black 3/0 Gamakatsu hook 18" back from the dodger. This fish displayed the same wild behavior as previous fish. I think because the trolling is so slow it gives these fish a chance to race ahead of the boat. This fish raced forward and wrapped itself around the DR cable four times! Fish number two came to the boat at 9:20. 65 feet on the rigger, a red 2/0 hook. My son caught this fish and it was a solid 8 lb. fish. A very nice way to end this most enjoyable fishery. If the season is extended do go out and give it a try. Use your downrigger and get deep and you will get the fish. Oh, and hang on when 8 am comes!
