Fishing can be such a humbling experience. You just never know when your luck might turn. Wednesday morning was my turn. I started off in my lucky spot with my lucky fly – nothing. Mike was having similar success. We decided to try some other areas of the lake that had produced for us last year. There is a bay on the far southeastern end that is quiet and secluded (sort of). There were fish rising to what I suspected were emergers. Since I was having no luck with my current setup, I thought I would change strategies and fish a dry line. That way I figured I could fish drys, emergers, or a deep chironomid. I still could not buy a fish.
There were no visible (to me) bugs anywhere near the surface, yet these fish were rising regularly. Must be small chironomids in the sub surface I thought. They certainly didn't like anything I tossed their way. This was very frustrating. Meanwhile, I was paying no attention to Mike. That is until a guy paddled by me and said, "What the heck is that guy in that red pontoon boat using? He is catching one right after another." I looked
over and there was Mike playing another nice fish. I make my over to him and find out he decided to keep fishing deep, but changed to a white damsel. The fish liked it a lot – he had caught 8 fish while I was changing lines and flies. I changed back to a sinking line and to the white damsel and caught my biggest fish of the trip – a very pretty rainbow that measured 19". I only caught one fish today, but that one was worth waiting for.
