We had our big trip of the year to the MarDon Resort at the Potholes Reservoir. We usually fish the Res. for Bass and the Seep lakes chain right across the street for Trout. Well we arrived Friday June 12 around 2:00 and the weather was nice. We went out boating and skiing on the res. and it was beautiful. That night we fished a nearby seep lake called Katy. 3 of us fished the lake with Float tubes and Fly rods, I was the only one to hook a fish, it was a nice trout around the 17 to 19 inch range, it got off right infront my tube after a nice 2-3 minute battle. Then the wind picked up! The next 3 days the wind was unbearable. Whitecaps on the res.. We tried to fish the res. for small mouth but it was just impossible. They said the wind was 40-60mph gusts and we all believe it. So we decided to go back to fishing the smaller semi-shielded seep lakes. We hiked in and fished an unnamed lake and the wind was not to bad for Saturday morning. We started at around 6:30am. Just 2 of us this time (3rd said its too damn windy and wouldn't get out of bed!) He should of came. Some of the best fishing I have had in a long time. I caught 14 fat rainbows they ranged from 13.5 to 15.5 inches, extremely fat. The water temp was 72. Suprised me how active the fish were with the water so warm! The fish would hit hard and make long runs and jump 2-4 feet out of the water. I lost at least as many as I caught. It was extremely hot action. At one time I had a fish on 4 casts in a row. I was using a number 12 black wolly bugger. I was using a full sinking line and stripping fast. There was a Damsel hatch going on when the fishing was hot, damsel nymphs all over the water. I thought about changing to a damsel but why change when I was so successful. My partner Doanums, had the same success, He was using a large olive leech probably about a 8 or 10. He landed 7 fish, one of his was 17. The others in the same range as mine. He used a sinking tip line and most just trolled without stripping. He is famous for pulling perch out of places that they are not suppost to be. This lake he failed to pull out any perch! That night we returned to the same lake with the same luck. Using the same gear we each caught nine rainbows in the 13.5-15.5 inch range. Fishin was great! The wind was horrible though. That night the wind got much worse and all of our plans for a week of fishing Dry Falls, Rocky Ford creek, Grimes and Lenore have been trashed. The weather calls for more wind and thunder showers so we are heading back. Many Bass and Walleye fisherman at the resort mad at the wind with us. Monday morning we packed and left for home upset and semi disappointed. This is June Go Away Wind!
