Lake Sawyer close to my brother's place at Lake Tapps. Our first venture into this lake, quite a bit larger than Cottage Lake. We got started a bit late. Beautiful morning and pretty water, with Mt. Ranier sticking up in the air...it was nice. We are belly boaters.
Went in near the public boat launch and fished the eastern shore right across from there. About 11:15 someone flicked a switch and the boaters and personal speed devices invaded the lake. Up to that time two bites and one small large mouth between us.
With the water all churned up and the waves peaking about five feet, we were going to give it up for the day. Decided to go around the point for a bit and try one run down and back before crossing and pulling out.
I put on a red and white brass Mepps, and let it sink to the bottom. Then I kicked just a slow as I could and keep some movement on so the mepps would fish deep. Best I can tell its about 15 to 30 feet in that slot.
About ten minutes into the run the mepps ran into an obstacle, so like all good fishermen, I set the hook, fulling expecting to catch a weed or a log. Ten to fifteen minutes later pulled up the biggest small mouth I've ever caught. Fish weighed just a bit over five pounds! Worth the day, and worth the trip, but be prepared for the boaters. Didn't raise any trout or kokanee.
