Spent 2 1/2 hours fishing at South Skookum yesterday. Fishing was very slow from both docks in the afternoon. Of nine or so people fishing near me, I saw one fish caught in 2 1/2 hours (22.5 hours per fish!). Saw a small boat come in later in the afternoon with a stringer of about six small trout 6 - 9 inch range. Fishing was somewhat better in the morning according to reports from other anglers. Wasn't close enough to tell if fish caught were rainbows or brooks. In previous years this lake has held good populations of both in the 12 inch range.
We tried salmon eggs, a couple different kinds of power bait, and a rooster tail spinner from the dock area. Mostly bottom fished. We didn't have so much as a bite. This lake charges a $3.00 daily use fee. Amenities include a developed campground with host, primitive boat launch - suitable only for small fishing boats, drinking water, outhouses, etc. There's a nice hiking trail around the lake. This lake is managed by the USFS Newport Ranger District.
