Fished the morning (7-11am). Weather was overcast with a slight breeze. Wind picked up later in the morning. Water temperature seems to be cooling with the warm days and cool nights that Columbia Basin has been enjoying the last two weeks.
Fishing was very good for fish in the 15-19 inch range. All fish that I caught this time were rainbows (unlike the summer months when a brown or two entered the picture. Fish were in superb condition, full of fight and quick to recover upon release. The Washington Fish and Game department has planted Dry Falls with a healthy population of 8-9 inch fish. When I inadvertently
allowed my fly to get up in the water column, I often hooked up with a little guy. Big fish seemed to be hugging the bottom. A motor-oil colored nymph in a 12-3X did the trick in the early part of the morning. A Black chronomid accounted for a couple more prior to a fair-sized hatch mid-morning and the standard black wooley bugger helped me finish out my day.
Lots of critters out in the early morning hours; coyotes, rabbits, deer, ducks, geese and the ever-present coveys of quail. What a great place to fish !!
