Their are some really nice rainbows in this lake, though I haven't
gotten any of them into my canoe lately. I've been out three times
in the month of May with only one fourteen incher to show for it.
The wind has always blown me off the lake early. Now I've gotten
smarter. I check the conditions using the DOT traffic cameras on
the 520 and I-90 bridges before I leave.

It shows the wind speed and direction as well.
My daughter Merrill and I put in at the Atlantic City boat ramp
at 7:00 am Monday morning. Conditions were pretty good. Water temp was 54. Just got our lines in the water when Merrill picked one up on a Super Duper with a piece of worm. Unfortunately, she hadn't set the hook well enough and it slipped off just as she got it to the boat.
Forty-five minutes later, I hooked into a real beauty. It was a
real beefy rainbow of at least 16 inches. Instant tragedy struck
again just as I reached down with the net. The rainbow took off
under my Grumman canoe and dragged the four-pound test across the keel. Fish gone. Ouch, that hurt. At least we know they're biting. I was using a wedding band spinner with a piece of worm. After that, we called it a morning.
I recommend fishing along the southwest side of Mercer Island. We
were seeing plenty of fish on the surface with the sidefinder
feature of my Fishin' Buddy II. Good Luck!
