Paddled out into Shadow Lake in my belly-boat starting about 10AM, down the channel flipping 1/4 oz. jigs (chartreuse/pepper, smoke/glitter, smoke/pepper) to either side into heavy cover... Nada.
Switched to Yo-Zura suspending crankbait (chrome w/ black stripe on back) twitched it just under the surface over lily pads along channel, vvvveeeeeerrrrryyyyy slow retrieve... Nada.
Switched to WiggleWart crankbait (grey and white w/ black stripe on back, red throat) when I reached the main body of water, flipping all around docks and along weed edges, varying retrieve... Nada.
Talked to a resident, told me the best times are evenings and after dark (please note: public access to this lake closes at dusk) and best things to use are nightcrawlers rigged Carolina style, or "Rat'l Trap" (sp?) crankbaits; has pulled out up to 5 pounders on both of these set-ups... Hafta stock up on those two items when it warms up a bit.
Day was overcast, air temp in the low 50's, water a bit on the cold side... Probably would have been more productive on a warmer, sunnier day... Bald eagle had better luck than I did; that was a spectacular sight! All in all a good experience for a first trip to this lake... I will return when it warms a bit.
Tight Lines.
