My wife, my friend Russell Johnston, and I fished Lake Lenore on Sunday the first of April. The fishing was so good Rusell and I came back and fished again the next day!
The weather both days was partly cloudy with variable winds. The temperature ranged from the high 40's to mid 50's. We fished the north end of the lake both days. On Sunday we shared the water with at most a dozen anglers at a time. On Monday there were only three other anglers out there with us.
The grand total of Lahontan Cutthroat caught and released was 35 over a two day period. The average size was a pound and a half to two pounds. The biggest of the fish looked to push seven pounds. For once, I had the camera!
The fishing went in streaks for us. For example, on our second day fishing we didn't land a fish for the first three hours. Over the next two and a half hours we caught 18 fish. After that we were skunked again until we called it a day an hour later. Curiously, while we did well throwing hardware (spinners and spoons), fly fishermen did not do well. But when we could not get a fish to hit, the flyfishermen in the know did very well using woolly buggers and chironomids. In fact, I saw a couple of fishermen land and release over 25 fish each. On top of all of this, some fishermen, despite their best efforts, did not do well during either time period. It would seem that the difference between success and failure (as far as catching fish goes) lies in the small details.
My advice, bring both a spinning rod and a fly rod. And don't forget a camera!
