A buddy and I have been hitting Sammamish during the early morning or during lunch lately. We sometimes fish from off the docks at the state boat launch, other times we take my canoe w/tolling motor out.
We've had pretty good success for perch (usually why trying for other things and sometimes intentionally) and mixed luck on 1 to 3lb smallies. Today we decided to stick on our light weight pop gear (me with a small rapala for a trailer and my friend with a wedding ring / powerbait combo) and try a little farther from shore. Well, after about a 1/2hr of nothing, I finally get a nice hit. At first I thought it may be the bottom, because the line just kind of stopped dead. Next thing I know the line (4lb) is ripping off my reel and about a 4lb silver bullet does a tail walk about 40 yrds behind us. After several more acrobatic moves and ripping out more line, I finally get this beauty up to the boat - doh! I forgot my net!! I tried to grab his lip (too much bassin lately) and ended up with my rapala stuck to my hand and the fish gone. Oh well - got a couple picks of it while it was still in the water. I'm thinking it must have been a rainbow (steelhead??). Beautiful fish!
and an amazing fighter on an ultralight setup!! (fishing about 1pm in with the bait about 15 to 20ft deep)
