Got to the lake late - 6am so I had to park over at the Elementary School and walk a ways back. We started fishing about 6:30. My sons, my friend Brad and his daughter. Started off with power bait off the bottom but it became quickly apparent that the kids were not yet ready for that fishing technique. Since I saw several fish caught by trollers, we switched to trolling a variety of thin blade spoons. A little weight to get the gear down, lots of fish on the surface. Over the next 3 1/2 hours we caught 5 planters and lost two nice fish in the 18-20" range. Overall, I would say it was slow fishing compared to last year's easy limits by 8am. Plus, except for the two nice fish, the average planter was small, 8-9 inches max. It was disappointing especially since I talked up the day to Brad. However, a good time was had by all and the kids seemed to not mind the slow fishing. The lake was crowded - of course. A nice Opening Day crowd, lots of happy faces even with the slow fishing. Would have stayed longer but off to baseball practise for one son and a game for the other. Fish when you can!
