HAD A GREAT DAY!!
Had a buddy (Brad B.) in town from Missouri who wanted to do a little bass fishing. So we fished for three days straight from dawn to dusk. Two of the days we fished Silver Lake and one day was a pretty incredible. On the first day, we got to the ramp about sun up. The air temp was in the upper 40's with overcast skies. Wind was blowing about 5-10 miles an hour creating a little chop. Water temp was about 55 degrees. We started on a main lake point which was decorated with mass amounts of wood cover. Large laydowns and stumps covered one side of the point for about 200 yards. I was throwing a white and chartruse spinner blade and Brad B was throwing a shallow diving crank bait (firetiger), which was his specialty. Sure enough, after a few casts, Brad B. was dialed in and hooked in to a 3 pounder off a laydown. After a couple of more futile attempts with the spinnerbait, I promptly pick up a rod which I had tied a lipless CB on to (Perch Color). I can throw this 1/2 oz lipless a mile and cover a lot of water with it. I hooked into my first bass not long after picked it up. Brad B. and I both caught a couple more bass off the wooded stretch, mainly 2 and 3 pounders on the crankbaits. 3 for Brad B. and 2 for me. We decided to hit another spot and shot across the lake to some old dock piers that looked like the "Shangri La" for bass. Our boat was promptly blown on top of some piers which were just below the surface and got high centered. After recovering, we went back to fishing and I caught about a 2.5 pounder on the outer edge of the piers on the spinnerbait. Brad B. was fishing the crankbait between the piers. Unfortunately, that was the only fish we could muster from the piers. The water temp was now fluctuating between 55-57 degrees. As we started fishing tighter to the shoreline, it was only a couple of cast before Brad B. hooked into 2 pounder with a buzz bait off a stump. Then he caught one on a spinnerbait pulling it threw a small patch of lilly pads. Then he caught one on the crankbait in a little cove with lots of cover...then another one on the buzz bait in the lilly pads. I was getting my butt kicked on this shoreline so it was time to move! 8 for Brad B. 3 for me. A light rain was starting fall with some dark clouds in the horizon. Lunchtime! A heavy rain came through for about 30 mins as we broke for lunch. Once the rains let up, we were back at it. This next location will remain undisclosed due the amount and size of the fish we caught here. We were still throwing crankbaits, when, of course, Brad B. hooked into one about 10-15 feet off the shoreline. I knew it was a good one when I saw that huge smile on his face and bow in his rod. He fought the fish around the boat as it kept running and taking the tip of the rod under water and while stripping drag. Finally, Brad B. landed the bass on his own with no help from me. I was too busy lying on the front deck of the boat laughing hysterically the entire time at the huge grin on his face. It was 6.1 pounds! We continued on to catch several more nice fish. We didn't weight them all but I don't think we needed to. We caught two 6 pounders, two 5 pounders and several 2, 3 and 4 pounders. We caught so many fish we had to release several from the livewell so the bigger ones would fit. We were keeping them for photos opts. We caught them all in about a 45 min window of time. Needless to say, we had an awesome day and will probably make this and annual event. This is a pic of Brad B's 6.1 pounder.
