Fished Cavanaugh with a bunch of my friends from school. Bitter cold, and windy too. Not too many guys on the lake, but they didn't seem to be having much in the way of luck. I went with a fly fishing club that a few friends of mine started. Other fly fishers reading this report should help me out. This lake is a really nice one. When I went there were tons of size 12 or so chironomids coming off, and fish rising everywhere. I used a little emerger pattern, and picked off a number of nice, (I think wild) cutthroats. Hell guys, its the middle of march and I am catching nice (11-15 inch)cutties on dries. Its really too bad that this lake is managed like just another put and take trout fishery. Its disappointing that the fish and game department can't make this into more of a fly oriented fishery, because the fly fishing there (at least at the time of season I was there) was far out producing the trolling, plug pullin, worm soaking, techniques by a long shot. If anyone!
knows who I should contact about this, please send me an email. I'd love to see this fishery being utilized to its fullest, and not be transformed into one of the multitudinous put and take power bait fisheries littered all over the Westside of the mountains. thanks ~Stephen
