Words can hardly relate the experience I've had this week fishing Medical Lake. Prior to this last week, I had only fished it two times all year, and always at the wrong parts of the day. This lake must be the area's best kept secret and it is certainly not my intention to alter that, however I feel it a must to tell tale of this aquatic jewel minutes away from civilization. As always, I equipped myself with the "must-haves" of my selection of offerings Which included various patterns and sizes of damsel, Muddler minnow, leech, and chironomids. I believe, if you don't have these basic flies in your box, you are starting at a disadvantage from the get-go.
The first night was a feeling out and getting acquainted to the lake endeavor, the second night, after consulting the local experts, was just plain business. I started out slow crawling a size 12 olive/tan damsel nymph nearest the bottom as possible stopping periodically to allow the fly to sink again, and resuming normal speed with the occasional twitch or strip of the line. I caught four nice Browns, none under two pounds, in fact I have not seen a small trout in this lake. Everybody I have seen on the lake during my outings, has had the same result as I. Some of theirs were upwards of four pounds. I have not landed a four plus pounder....yet. The largest fish I've caught, I took Saturday, the 15th I believe); it was 21" and pushing 3 and a half pounds. I hear that red chironomids work well later into the fall, I can't wait to find out! Good luck to Huff, don't miss out on this final frenzy of fins. Always catch and release.
