Indulging in a state of suspended adolescence, a friend and I set out to
beat the heat with some cliff jumping and snorkeling at Chapman Lake. The
water was nice and cool after our typically crappy July 4th weekend, and we
managed to outsmart the plentiful populations of rattlesnakes and poison ivy.
The one downfall of the trip was the loss of my beloved diving mask.
Supporting the stereotype, my female companion managed to drop an easy throw,
allowing my mask, and my chances of underwater fish viewing to slowly sink to
the bottom of the lake. She did, however, redeem herself in my eyes by diving
off of cliffs that send chills up my yellow spine.
Although it was the heat of the day, we boated a couple of nice silvers
(12-13 inches) on trolled vibrax spinners tipped with maggots. My friend also
caught scads of small bass, crappies, sunfish, and perch. Maybe I'm turning
into an elitest, but my tatses are somewhat more fickle. I chucked plastics
and crankbaits for an hour or so to no avail, and we headed home. The silvers
were encouraging enough to lead me to plan a night fishing trip for tonight.
I'll let you know about the results, even though Eastern Washington anglers
seem to be few and far between on this site. We must be either too busy stock
piling food and weapons for Y2K, or else our cousins/wives won't let us use
the computer.
