It was a beautiful sunny day on Lake Stevens with no wind. However, fishing was slow. It was my first day of kokanee fishing this year and I was not a particularly efficient fisherman.

I measured the water temperature down to 80 feet. Interestingly, it was roughly 46° from the surface to about 55 feet. Then the water warmed to about 49° around 75 feet. I saw some big schools at the deeper level but could not entice them to bite even after trolling through them with different combinations of lures, dodgers, leader lengths and speeds.

There were fish hitting the surface early in the morning. Trolling on the surface to about 15 feet I had some bites but only one in the boat. A God's Tooth spoon and a green 'v' spinner with green glow beads got the hits. My set backs were 100+ feet due to the mirror like water.

I tried something new with corn which, in retrospect, I wish I had not done the first time out of the gate for the year. Instead of my usual kokanee kid/Sam Baird concoction with garlic I substituted pro cure anise fish oil. Anise is probably fine but I have more experience with the garlic and thus confidence.

Maybe there was a reason I was the only boat on the water at sunrise! All in all, it's hard to beat a beautiful day on the water.

I got to the Lake around noon, marked a few fish on the way out of the no wake zone, but basically spent the whole day looking. Zero bites with all kinds of combo's, the one thing I constantly got in to were weeds. I've never had to clean dodger and lure as often as I did today :-( Seems like there was gunk at all different depths and locations. Near the north end my sonar said it was 5 feet deep, clearly it was 90, but the gunk was like pea soup. I did see the fish in the middle around 150' but no tempting them either. Hope things improve, and yes a sunny day on the water is worth gold!

I took a swing through the north west area and ran into some weeds too. Still a nice day on the water!

Thanks Ben for the report and feeding the kokanee some God's Tooth. Fishing there continues to be a challenge with the cold water temperature. I know someone who got 3 this morning.

The Gods Tooth is a remarkable spoon!

With the kokanee fishing a bit slow, I start looking at my lures. When you rig the God's Tooth for kokanee, I think you use an 8 mm chrome bead. Is that a metal or plastic bead? Do you ever use rattle beads?
