The good weather presented a nice opportunity to get out with my daughter and a buddy to test out some upgrades to the boat. Despite our late start, we got on fish right away. The first spot we tried was producing mostly native rainbows, so we decided to try another area in search of more hatchery keepers. We tipped our lures with nightcrawlers at the beginning of the day but it became apparent that they preferred corn over the worms. We fished 1 and 2 color lead core rods on my planer boards. The Old Goats in perch were working so well right off the bat that we didn’t get a chance to run other gear. Later in the day we ran a plug on the downriggers at 25’. This also produced a few fish. I was a little surprised since we hardly marked anything on the fish finder. I guess you just never know unless you try. Our best speed seemed to be at 1.7 mph. I was pleased to see the fish were striking quite aggressively. Only 2 managed to fall off the hooks while 13 found their way into the cooler. My daughter did awesome. The secret it to keep her warm and well fed.
Tight lines everyone and happy new year.

Dave: Way to go! What a great report. You are making awesome sweet memories with your daughter that you'll both cherish forever. Thanks for the the shrimp you sent me. Have been quite successful with them. It's amazing how those Old Goats work too. I fish them the same way you're fishing them when I can make it out here on the west side too except I don't use a planer board. Keep up the good work.

Good to hear the shrimp flies are working for you. Send me a report sometime, I’d love to hear what’s working best for you.

Awesome Dave! Your daughter looks to be close in age to our granddaughter (3 1/2) who got her first fishing pole for Christmas. Can't wait to get her out for pictures like yours. Thanks for the great report and super pictures. :-)

Last summer she landed 3 sockeye just before she turned 4. At 3 years old I would attach helium balloons to her fishing pole. She then could practice releasing them into the air and the reeling them back in. I’d also recommend doing this practice with a life jacket on as the bulkyness can add problems. For sockeye practice I had her reel in heavier objects across the yard. The practice payed off. She hasn’t tapped out yet.

Great ideas!! We'll have our granddaughter for the weekend, think some "lawn practice" will take place. :-)
