We arrived at the launch at Keller at 7:15 and headed out and got our lines in the water. The first three fish came pretty quickly and were all 12 inch kokanee. The next strike came on the sidewinder planer and was a vicious take down. The fish came air born behind the boat with two big jumps and broke off my 15 pound leader 6 inches above the lure! A big kokanee? I won't ever know but it sure got my blood pumping. The next 4 or 5 fish were nice rainbows around 18 inches. Until this point all the action had been on the planers and surface lines and finally the downrigger at 17ft goes off. It ends up being a beautiful 18 inch kokanee! We fished until 2pm and headed home. We kept our speed between 1.3 - 2 mph and orange and pink Apex were the hot lure tipped with pink corn soaked in Super Dipping Sauce. It was a great start to the new year!

nice fish! you obviously have a heater on the boat, as your boys are dressed like it's spring. :)

Dang, I'll say that's a good start to the new year, way to go and great pictures. Probably wouldn't have done near as well without the kids along. So great to see a nice Kokanee again.

Nice Kokanee indeed.

That fish in the 4th picture, held by a feller in a Camo jacket, is that a Cutthroat? Spotting is much different than Rainbow in 3rd picture. Also, Rainbow jaw does not extend past it's eye. Check out jaw on fish in 4th picture, jaw reaches beyond eye of fish, which is consistent when I.D. a Cutthroat.

I agree that it looks like a cutthroat. It didn't have the classic red slash under its throat so I am not sure. We took a quick picture and put it back.

Could have been a lahontan or cutbow as they don't always have the obvious markings but yeah, very cutty looking to me.

Were any of those Kokanee clipped? Would be nice to think that some hatchery fish have survived although I have heard they aren't releasing them anymore.

Non of them were clipped. They all had adipose fins.

Thanks for the report. Nice to hear there are some Kokanee around. Were there any problems with the launch or water level! Thinking of giving it a try on Friday.
