Well me made a run to Deep Lake one last time before it closes next week. The weather was a little breezy and overcast but it kept other fisherman away, so we had the lake to ourselves until we were leaving when a second boat showed up. We were on the water at 06:30 and the first line out shortly after. The first fish caught only took 2 minutes, didn’t even get to set the second line down when the first fish hit. I set the lines back 25-30’ and down 40 and 48’ on the downriggers.
I didn’t see the huge schools of fish that I normally see, the fish were mostly spread out, but when we hit the schools they hit our lure. The hot colors for us was a black and silverish white Kokabow dodger and a homemade pink fly (I copied a tail gunner pattern) with garlic shoe peg corn. 95% of the fish were caught on this color pattern, they didn’t seem to have much interest in anything else we offered. My fly was pretty torn up after fishing, so I intend to make more.
We ended up with 16 Kokanee and losing only 3 since I tried horsing them into the boat without a net. The fishing dropped off considerably after 9 as this fishery is an early morning gig, so we left at 9:30. The fish averaged 11-12”. The kokanee meat is very nice and pink, can’t wait until next year.
