After a lengthy debate between the little guys on each shoulder I intervened and decided to submit a report for the opening day of the 2018 Lake Washington coho season. The report is for the opener and the next day. The opener was a killer 5-star rating but the next day only a 2 or 3. It poured down rain late morning through early afternoon on the opener and completely changed the fishery.

Sunday, the opener there were coho everywhere along the Kirkland waterfront and Moss Bay. Monday the fish had scattered and it was very hard to locate a school of fish. Once located the fish still came out to play. We fished the Kirkland waterfront/Moss Bay area, Yarrow Bay, Arrowhead Point and the Sheridan Beach area. We saw action in all areas but caught the most fish in the vicinity of Yarrow Bay.

For the opener we stuck with flashers and flies with a herring strip. We ran the flies approximately 26” behind the flashers. On the opener green was the color for our boat. The opener was lights out fishing for both coho and large cutthroat. Monday was another story.

On Monday, the day after the opener the fish had scattered. When we found a school we were still able to get them to play but finding schools of fish proved to be challenging. Also on Monday we experimented with various presentations. Monday when we found fish, plugs turned out to be the way to go. Smaller chartreuse, green/white and magenta plugs proved to be deadly. Who knows why but we lost quite of few fish Monday.

Both days we chased meter marks while trying to maintain 2.3-2.5 mph. Our set back from the clip was around 20 feet. Between coho, chinook and cutthroat both days we had lots of action. We were a little selective only keeping nicer fish. In the end the box was full and the large fish were a 14# coho and 24” cutthroat.

Thank you for the report. Really nice fish. I went out on Tuesday and admittedly got skunked other than cutthroats. Your report helped confirm that there are coho out there! I normally catch fish but somehow Lake Washington coho elude me.

I threw everything I had at them except plugs. I am going to buy a couple mag lips and wiggle warts and try them this Monday or Tuesday.

Thanks again for the positive report! I'll keep trying. Fish on!

Great report Randy and glad you posted as all your reports are informative, entertaining and productive for others out there trying to scratch out a fish or two! I unfortunately can't make it up there until possibly next weekend but glad to see they are in and some are biters! Beautiful looking fish too!
