Wife and I took a five night boat camping trip to the San Juan islands last weekend with fishing on Sunday through Tuesday. I was able to find the bait, some places lit up the entire FF screen, 100' deep with small jumpers all over the place. Hit the points at the tide shifts and riffles which seemed to the right spots. Fish checker said it had been very slow with only one fish on Monday and two Tuesday.
I tried upper column, lower column and everywhere in between (with everything in the box) but I think the fish were all full with so much bait around. We did see one school of Coho roaming around, tried buzz bombs and even jigged over the schools of bait.
The one exciting time was a when the clip[ popped off and I started loosing lots of line unable to make any headway, initially thinking Chinook, but the lack of head shakes seemed odd. Finally after about 10-15 minutes and sore forearms a giant ling cod came to the surface, damn, wrong species. Kind of odd to pick it up trolling with the DR, but I think a small fish may have bit the lure and the ling was after the little something that I was dragging around.
Maybe I can pick up some Coho in 8-1 or 8-2 this weekend.
