Saturday
Purchase of our boat was finally completed on Friday so Saturday we hit up Lake Cavanaugh. We arrived around 11:30 and fished until 7:00. Once we were all settled we began and the action was quick! We ran our typical kokanee gear, dick nite flashers with a pink squid hoochie tipped with gulp maggots and scent. I say we were targeting kokanee but were okay with catching just about anything. We fished through all sorts of weather, it started out sprinkling, then some seriously heavy heavy downpour with some scattered lightning in the distance, then the day finished sunny and warm. Very glad we went with the full enclosure for the boat, that will come in handy in the PNW. We caught lots of fish, mostly rainbows with some occasional cutts. Size wasn't great, I will say, lots of fish in the 7-9" range with a few larger fish up to 13". Kept a four but caught a bunch, a lot of fun on the new boat. The meat was beautiful though, not the typical white stocked trout mean I am accustomed to seeing.
Sunday
Made a few mods the boat, added some rod holders and went and got some new gear. Hope to get some downriggers at some point but trying to limit the amount boat B-O-A-T-ing I am doing with this new purchase. Picked up some jet divers as we saw lots of marks on the finder in the 30-40' range.
Got to the lake around 6:00 pm for the evening bite and started fishing with a similar setup with the dick nite dodgers except we subbed the long-line banana weights for the jet divers and half the rods we put Elgin Fishing God's Tooth Spoons, one pink and one half blue/silver. Been seeing lots of anglers having success with them and was pleased to find them at Cabelas! So decided to give them a try. Long story short, similar fishing to Saturday, constant action, small fish. I liked the divers better than the banana weights as I could feel the fish better. Obviously, riggers will be the best option when we have the funds. The big difference today was the God's Tooth spoons. ALL fish were caught on the spoons, none on the hoochies. I am sold on those spoons, action was much much better on Sunday though we were only out for two hours.
Overall
Positives
Lake Cavanaugh is beautiful
Action was constant
Fishing pressure was low
Fish meat quality was great
Not a ton of pleasure / recreational boaters
Negavites
Size of fish wasn't anything special
Boat launch is frustrating
I will be back, but I have lots of other lakes to explore with the new boat!
