Last weekend the bad weather kept us away from the lake and almost today....but we elected to buck up and don the rain gear if need be. After a major downpour went through we launched and fished rain-free. Chilly and windy but what the heck.
We started with the trout troll and within five minutes P. landed a nice fish. Each of us lost some nice fish and quite a few bites that didn't button up, but the action was steady all day.
We decided life was uncertain so ate dessert first. We stopped at the public dock and got Lopez ice cream cones at the concession stand. After wading through yards of goose poop we had three ice cream cones in hand and made it back to the boat....at which point K. was trying to peel off the paper wrap on the cone when it broke and his ice cream ended on the floor of the boat. Fish slime and dairy is an interesting new culinary experience.
More trolling, more fish. We stopped for a hot dog lunch on shore and enjoyed momentary sunshine. Upon leaving the rock spot for lunch, I decided to cast for bass hoping this week they'd finally be moving and sure enough I had a hit immediately. I was thinking I'd be getting the spring dinks, but a super heavy big bass took my small lure on a small perch rod. The drag was squealing and he was taking line. I got a look at him several times before he saw the boat and headed south and the lure popped out. That was a nice fish!
There were only two other fishing boats on the water when we started, but for most of the day it was just us. There was a family fishing on shore and we had nice interaction with them cheering back and forth as we caught fish. P. had a a lot of line out, and from a long distance a trout came jumping straight up and we could see his very broad sides. He was not on long, but was likely the big one that got away.
I was thrilled to catch 3 largemouth and 1 trout. P. had 1 bass and 5 trout.
K. was the late bloomer but ended up catching and releasing 9 fish today, beating everyone. (2 bass, 7 trout.)
The wind picked up significantly and ran us and about 8 kayaks off at the same time which was a little hectic at the ramp. It was a great day.
