Well, I was debating whether to post a report of Skykomish steelhead fishing, but I figured I'd go ahead since I've benefited so much from others' reports.

I fished the opener on 6/1. The Reiter area was packed with rigs and fisherman. Although others were doing well, I didn't get a bite for hours, but I eventually ended up going 2 for 8. One was hooked on a nightmare jig with a couple of salmon eggs added and the rest were hooked on spoons. It was frustrating losing so many fish, but I eventually got my limit.

I decided to head back the next day, and ended up going 2 for 6, all on spoons. I even got a bite on my third cast (although I had the same troubles landing fish)!

Fishing was good enough on Friday and Saturday that I decided to make time to hit the river again on Tuesday. There were a surprisingly high number of cars at the Reiter lot for a Tuesday afternoon, but the fishing had cooled off dramatically. I fished for 3-4 hours and didn't touch a fish, and only saw one hooked. So my 1-star rating is for Tuesday, even though Friday and Saturday were good fishing. I think that all the biters got culled in the first couple days of the river being open.

Thanx for the 3-day report MPM. I haven't made it up there yet, so I was wondering about the size of the fish you saw caught. I'm concerned about the ever-shrinking size of our hatchery steelhead. Sounds like you saw a lot of fish the 1st 2 days - what would you say the average size was? Closer to 6-7 lbs or more like 4? Did you see any 2-salters? Again, thanks for the report.

The fish I caught were in the 28 to 30 inch range, probably 7-9 lbs (although I didn't weigh them). That seemed typical of the other fish I saw.

Thanks MPM for your report. You certainly put in your time, and received some rewards. I heard that Highway side is no longer OK due to the railroad crossing. That is sad. That was always my favorite side. Also wondering how high the river is to allow travel to less popular locations...? Your comment is appreciated when you find a moment. Thanks.

I don't really know the current status of the RR crossing area, although I definitely saw some people fishing on the highway side of the river. The days I fished the river the flows were in the 3500 to 4500 CFS range, which isn't too high. You can check the status here: https://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?GLBW1

I caught a 11 or 12 lb and a 8 or 9 lb on the opener and another. Didn’t weight them but the 1 big one I caught was pretty big and put up a great fight. Had to chase it downriver as it was just screaming line out my reel

I also didn’t want to report on it as I know it is already packed as it is but by now as you found out most of the biters have been taken already or have been spooked into hiding

I agree about the weekend, but I have hit fish other days-not as many and in different places-and even with a good hookset they can pop off-they don't enjoy getting caught. Cover the water, I use spoons too, it can be tiring moving around, but the fish like to do that too :)

And very glad many are NOT posting. Go up and give it a try and learn the river from experience and working with others, keep the bank clean. Take good notes, you will catch fish-it is not a trout pond and they are not easy to land as you pointed out, find a tactic like bobber and jig or metal, stick with it and remember 20% of the river holds fish, 80% does not. Good luck to all!

ROFLMAO . I live in Goldbar and have fished the Hwy side for year's . The "Roomer's" about BNSF or Snohomish county Sheriff are just that . I have never seen them their . However that said the land owners are fed up with the trash . I have been thanked for picking up and taking out trash (please STOP bringing glass bottles ) also if you see or here a train STOP let it go bye (the engineer will wave and give a thumbs up ) I generally limit before the 6:am stampede on the other side . lol , But it's funny to watch 80 people run and try to get 1 of the 3 productive rocks over their . . . Tight line's .

There was a old guy the other day saying there was a guy that lives near cable hole trying to charge for parking on his property and he was calling harrassing and threatoning BNSF to inforce and ticket people.
