Decided I would celebrate my birthday with a post work troll on Lake Samish yesterday. Didn't arrive to the parking lot until 4:50 and immediately pulled my *unlatched* tacklebox out of the car, spilling its contents across the parking lot. After a minute of chasing cannonball weights and beads down the hill, removing a treble hook from my foot, and letting out a few choice words, we made record time setting up the inflatable and getting trolling with a brief once over by AIS in there somewhere.
Wind was a pain, every time it seemed to calm down for a minute it would pickup again, not truly settling until the sun went behind the hill. We marked tons of fish on the sonar between 20 and 60' deep but had a hard time getting them to bite. At 8:15pm we called it quits having 3 short bites/ldrs, 1 lost at the net, and 1 in the box. In the last hour the fish were starting to be active on the surface, as is common before sunrise on this lake, but a setup trolled 5' down didn't get touched. I kept expecting the bite to turn on as the sun went down, but it never did.
Action was on a pink kokanee bug and a couple colors of wedding ring.
Talked to one other boat at the launch who also had 1 fish in the box. Seems like the morning bite is where its at on Samish right now.
