First cast at about 7:30. Got a short day today, so had to make the most out of it. Started working the shoreline not too far from the launch. Started off in shallow working dropshot and jerkbait.
1 hr into it, got 2 swipes on the jerk and something stole my DS bait. A little bit after that, finally hook and land my first fish. Just a little 1# SMB on the jerk.
Then I felt what I thought was a solid fish, only to find out it was another 1# but hooked on the back with the jerk. Caught a few more smaller SMB along this point.
Spotted 4 fish under a dock. 2 were LMB in the 2# range and a couple smaller SMB. Only got 1 of the LMB to look at a lizard, but no nibbles.
Kept working the jerk and caught more SMB. Finding active 1# SMB in about 8-12' of water. Packed up at 10:45. I believe I caught 8 or maybe 9 today. Half were very small, 10-12". The others were about 14-15". I weighed one of them to make sure my eyeballing estimation was still close. When I pulled this one in, I estimated it to be about 1 to 1 and 1/4 #. Scale said 1.30#. Close enough.
A couple of cool highlights. 1 was when I was working my jerkbait along the shore. I could see something following the lure after a couple of pops. I let it sit a sec, then pop it again and the fish snatches it. I could see it was just a small(10-12") SMB but I see a 2nd fish chasing after it trying to snatch the lure. I didn't set the hook and just let the fish grab it and pull it down. As it's going down, the lure comes off and the bigger fish steals it, lol. Then I set the hook. It was one of the 1-1/4# size fish.
Another was when working the jerkbait on a point, hooked into a 1# SMB. There was a 2nd one identical size right behind it. It was following that fish exactly like they were attached together mouth to tail. It wasn't until the hooked fish was at boat side before it got spooked.
Cant seem to catch anything decent anymore. Maybe it's my technique. It seems to attractive the more active and smaller fish.
