Went to Langlois for the first time after my trip back from Chelan. I looked at several option from Beehive Resi in Upper Wenatchee to Copper Lake near Cle Elum, Rattlesnake Lake but went to Langlois because I have never been there and I heard a pre opening day report from an angler that takes wounded Vets there to fly fish, plus I needed to work on my fly fishing since fishon mentioned how he did in a report using bugs.
Got to the lake about 10:30 with about 12 cars in the parking lot. Started out trolling a 4 weight with intermediate line and the same for the leader which was a first for me on the leader part. No clue what to try first but the Olive Hail Bob got the start. On my Spinning rod I tried Flatfish.
A few strikes on the fly but nothing on the FF. Tried different colors, nothing on the FF. Tried Dick Nites, nothing, tried different sizes and colors, nothing. Back to FF, nothing. I did get a few hits on lures, but no fish.
I switched the fly over to an Olive Willy and I had action on this bug all day long. I caught one fish on a FF and had to switch it out for a bug and did manage to catch a few on my Spinning set up with a Rickards Emerger.
Had over 30 On the Olive Willy and tried many other bugs on the spinning rod with little results. I even had an extra Olive Willy and it did it do well on my Spinning rod. This shows that Depth had a whole lot to do with finding the strike zone with my fly rod compared to my Spinning rod.
Fish were about 10-11”. As the day ran out of light, an Angler in a rube told me that he caught a Kokanee Dry that they planted. He was near the launch and the water started to boil with risers and they were schools of these small 7”skinny trout...not sure if they were Kokanee or not as the tail was not to forked and they had spots and colors to them.
The coolest part of the outing was that I messing with these small fry near the launch and I heard this noise that I was not familiar with above me....sort of a drone noise. I look up and in swooped an Eagle to grab a fish about 30 feet from me. The noise that the wings generated from the speed it was going was so crazy. Totally caught me off guard.
I also heard that tagged fish were in the lake after the fact. I need to do a better job of checking for these next time I am there.
I did not have my Trout Magnet set up with me, but did rig up my trolling rod with it which was less than idea and did pick up a few of the 10-11” fish and more of the 7” fish. Not one angler was Bobber fishing and I think one could have done very well with this method with plenty of fish rising.
