Typically I don't go opening day due to the crowds, but the cool wet weather made me think that things might not be too crazy and I had an unexpected couple free hours, so decided to take the kayak to Pine. Got to the lake before 1:30. Plenty of people fishing, but certainly not crowded. Wasted no time launching the yak and got on the water. Started dragging an olive bead head Wooly Bugger, but after 50 yards I hadn't had a bump, which is atypical of opening day from my experience, so swapped to an orange flat fish. Immediately started getting hits and didn't take long to c&r my first trout. Caught a few more going across the lake, but still didn't think it was all that hot, so switched to a chartreuse/nickel spoon and that made the difference. From then until I left at 4p the hits were fairly consistent with a few moments where I'd no more than get the line out and I'd have another fish on. I lost count after the first dozen fish and probably c&r'd roughly two dozen and lost probably 10 before I got off the water at 4p. I wore my rain gear expecting a drenching, but it never really did rain, so was a pleasant trip all around. Just what I needed. The fishing pier as well as the boat traffic had increased considerably by the time I quit, but still didn't seem too bad. Fish ranged from 9"-14" with some nice fat trout in the mix.
