I've fished the last four days consecutively. It has taken some experimentation, but overall the fishing has been pretty decent.
Friday was cloudy and cooler, and the hot ticket seemed to be a red 0000 and a glass bead-headed Olive Willy. I hooked one fish that bent my ultralight rod so far over that I thought I was snagged on the bottom until he erupted out of the water behind the boat. One impressive splash-down later the line went slack. That was the biggest fish I've ever hooked in that lake.
Saturday, Sunday and Monday were sunnier, but featured some unfortunate winds between 4:00 and 6:30 or 7:00pm. I'm using an old 12' Starcraft aluminum boat, and when it gets hit broadside with a stiff breeze, it can be challenging to keep things pointed in the right direction without dialing in most of the thrust on the electric motor.
Later in the evenings the wind seemed to calm down, and the swallows starting working the lake. I'm always amazed by the artistry and agility of the swallows. They are definitely the masters of flight in ground effect, spending their time wheeling and diving within a wingspan of the surface.
On the three sunnier days, I tried all kinds of rigs, including spoons and flatfish. The top performer by a wide margin, however, was a 50/50 Dick Nite dodger, with a black, bead-headed flashy bugger on a short leader. I tried using various weights, but found that the best results were gained with no additional weights attached. I don't have a precise count, but I'd estimate about a dozen fish per session of about 2-2.5 hours. Despite some wide variations in the fights offered by the fish, most were nearly identical in size at around 12 inches.
Weekdays are preferable to weekends when it comes to launching and parking. On Sunday, there was a guy in an Escalade towing a cargo trailer who wasn't satisfied with just parking ON the boat launch. This rocket scientist felt it necessary to park ACROSS the entrance to the launch and leave his vehicle there for several hours. Nice, dude. Really nice.
