First thing first,

Huge shout out to Dave Browning, owner of Kekeda Fishing Tackle. He was generous enough to reach out and custom tie some flies for me to try on Lake Washington.

I was in hopes of trying out a few different colors/patterns, but only one got used due to the amount of action it recieved.

Same depth, speed, and location as my previous report with the exception of trolling closer to Moss Bay and using different gear. The light blue and white fly Dave tied was absolutely lights out. I tipped the trail hook with a bit of night crawler.

Needless to say, I am “hooked” on these flies. Just another weapon in my arsenal to throw at them this spring and summer.

Blue, silver, and white seem to be really good on the lake right now. All the fish I caught today were full of smolt. My guess would be to mimic that the best you can.

Tight lines all, and enjoy this weather while we can!

Thank you for being willing to go out and give them a shot, Dj! Looks like I'm the hands of a skilled angler like yourself they can be pretty effective. Glad they worked that well for you. For those of you that don't tie your own I'm going to be adding a smolt series to the site today. Basically this fly with different colored backs. Thanks again Dj and outstanding job out there!

Dave,

I’m honored to be able to test out these flies. I might scale down the larger ones and try them for kokanee. Thanks again for sending them, I’ll test more colors next nice day we get over here.

Try tying up a stickleback varient for optimal cutty success, green back white belly with a bit of red for the gills and a bit of silver flash. Id typically tie them up using rabbit strips and silver flash. Lake washington has alot of sticklebacks and the cutties are known to key in on them. Nice report mr. Butler, well done.

One question since I don't use flies very often. What lb test and leader length do you use between the fly and the dodger?

Hi Ben, I tied these with 20lb fluorocarbon leader. Seemed to give it a bit of action, with the addition of the spinner!

DJ....any idea what the "smolts" are?

Steve, multiple people have said they are Long Fin Smolt. I’ve also heard they are salmon smolt. When I looked online, they resembled the long fin more so.

Great report DJ. I also have a ton of luck on Lk. Wash. using a white marabou fly with orange flash in it. I put it 12-16" behind the dodger and use 10# test.
