It was a balmy 39 degrees and no wind. The sun was expected to peek out this afternoon at lake Stevens before the rains hit tonight in full force. Sounds like a good day for fishing. I only had my electric trolling motor this time with oars, and was prepared to try some jigging on the east side in an area I can only describe as "Extreme downrigger fishing!" I dropped down my led core line to about 20’ with a reli 50/50 gold/silver, flasher setup, tipped with night crawler. On the other line I used a downrigger with 30’ drop back and 30’ deep to gold/silver dodger + gold/silver god’s tooth, worm tipped. Suddenly the depth goes from 40’-37’-35-32-28’ and I see my dowrigger and line pounding the bottom. I react with a panic retrieval and raise it up to 20’, stop the motor and reel in the line. I grab the led core line and reel it in too. Hey, something is on the line… Yep, ends up being a 13” cutty! Next I tried my luck with some jigging. I had a hoochie with worm added, Gods tooth with and without worm. Boring, but I received a good bite while I was looking away. Unfortunately, I accidently reflex jerked and lost the fish. Argh! I trolled back to the launch as sunset approached. A nice young man (Brian) and I shared our experiences of the afternoon. It was great to be on the water, and to bring home dinner. Happy fishing!
I am curious how you jigged with the God’s Tooth? I have purchased a few this week, and while I expect to troll with them, I do a lot of jigging for Mackinaw, but I am jigging 2-3 oz. lead jigs. The God’s Tooth is light as a feather. Even if you added weight 18-20” above it, that would feel odd not to have your rig be the center point of your weight. (It would feel like you are jigging the added lead) — not judging at all, looking for your advice— Thanks!
Hey Quadfather, Jonb and ElginFishing gave me some recommendations on how to jig with the God’s tooth lure in response to my report last week. Jonb suggested that I use the tooth as a flasher, and run a separate hook to a worm. ElginFishing suggested that I add a split shot just ahead of the lure. I ended up adding a larger split shot, 16” above the God’s tooth, and tipped it with worm..it worked exactly as you suggest. Only had one bite, so improvements need to be made with my setup. Not sure how to use it as a flasher without some beads or a swivel, and yes, it is light as a feather. Trolling works pretty sweet though.
Thanks for working the God's Tooth again FishingTenor and good job in landing another one! Had not tried drop shotting the God's Tooth before so sounds like a great idea fear_no_fish! Thanks for the suggestion:)
