As all flyfishers know, lake-fishing in the hot summer weather can be extremely challenging and often fruitless unless you know what to do. On Saturday, August 20, 2005, there were five flyfishers including us in the morning but just one bump, I think, was all we had. We saw thick mayfly hatches from 10 am to noon and cutts rising everywhere just as a week ago. Cutts were not interested in our flies at all but the real thing. However, my friend and I knew that mayfly hatches would be followed by damsel hatches in the afternoon, based on our past experience. My friend and I presented our favorite damsel nymph and started catching healthy cutts around 1 pm. Fishing Grimes in the hot summer weather does not have to be fruitless. It can be a very productive fishing trip as long as you know what to do. Have fun with your summer lake flyfishing!
