To honor our past presidents, I decided to take the day off and go fishing.
The weather report said it would be below freezing until 10:00am. That seemed like a nice time to start.
I made it on the water at 11:00am and headed left this time off of the launch to troll the East side. I brought with me a bunch of home brewed lures with beads and blades or flashers and I was armed with all varieties of Goods tooth lures and dodgers. Line#1: lead core line to gold/silver home brew. Line#2: downrigger to 50/50 gold/silver dodger and 50/50 gods tooth lure; 30’behind ball. As JoshH said in an earlier report, the level shifts were tricky and required a lot of work. Now I know what you were talking about JoshH. I had the downrigger at about 30’, and saw levels changing from 20’ to 50’, forcing me to turn the boat in and out with the occasional panic downrigger retrieval! Tough to keep near the bottom, but there were fish down there… I passed back and forth across a nice dip that showed marks. On the third pass, I was able to see my downrigger level go right through a school. Guess what? Yep –Fish On. It was a 11” cutty. Decent fight for the size. After three more passes and a couple of snags, losing my lure, it was time to move forward. More interesting fluctuations of depth and fish marked the East side. Also a few more snags. Wind kicked up and brought with it a wind chill. It was time to go. Next time I may try jigging those fish out of their hideouts. Happy Fishing!

Thanks for the report and giving the God's Tooth some work. That is tough fishing on the East side for sure. Glad you caught one:)

Yea fishing near bottom that side of the lake will keep you busy for sure. I hung up a few times there. I really wanted to get out this last weekend, but all of the snow at my place kept me home.

Hey JoshH, The dynamic bottom on the east side is ideal for the fish. As I said in my report, I will prepare for jigging next time. I have a pretty good idea where the dynamic changes were. A couple of unusual covered docks mark the area.

Don't overlook jigging bait. A spoon with the hook removed (like a tiny flasher), 16" leader a size 6 bait hook and a half a night crawler are deadly for trout. Id bet a gods tooth with the hook removed and hook tipped with worm would work great in that situation.

Hey ElginFishing, have you ever jigged with the Gods tooth, or do you recommend a modification to improve results?

I have jigged the God's Tooth before. You have basically 4 options. I recommend the slow action setting first. If no strikes after a few minutes then try fast action setting. Lastly, you can place a small split shot just in front of the split ring or duo lock snap and try fast action again and then try it on slow action if needed. Each option will provide a different action and drop rate. Probably jig with a 2' pull and drop.
Definitely worth a try on the East side of the lake.
