In the early 2010's Yellow Perch were first detected in Curlew Lake. Since then their population has exploded. Unlike a number of our other perch fisheries these fish maintain a large average size and fish above 10" are more the norm with the occasional 12-13" perch mixed in. The lake is regarded by many as the state's best Yellow Perch ice fishery. With that in mind my wife and I headed up to ring in the New Year with a little perch-icefest.

We found the ice anywhere from 5-8". I drilled a couple test holes and in the first hole I marked a large school of perch below. It didn't take long to confirm they were indeed perch. I never left that hole all morning and pulled well over 30+ perch ranging from 9-11" from that one spot alone. My wife bounced around a little bit finding fish in holes adjacent to me or deeper. Within 3 hours we had nearly 50 perch chilling on ice and had released many more. It was a perch bite unlike any other I've experienced.

We caught fish on a variety of lures but smaller tungsten jigs were responsible for most. I've posted a video of a new Washington Ice Fishing video series I am kicking off below. Enjoy!

I do love that lake. Wish I was closer so I could take advantage of the ice perch!

Question for the Curlew fisherman......in the spring (late May), I am going to stay at a rental home in the north end of the lake. It's just above the trestle.

Does anybody know how the fishing (trout) is in the spring in that part of the lake? And can you actually FISH from the railroad trestle if you want to? I will be leaving my boat at home so I'll be dock and possibly trestle fishing. I used to use simple power bait setups elsewhere in the lake and used to do good. Not sure about the far north end.
Thanks.

Been a few years, but there used to be really good fishing with bait in the hole just north of the trestle. Last time we were there people fished off the trestle. You could always fish off the Tiffany's dock, not far from there. Spring should be excellent. I was actually pretty sad when somebody dumped the perch in the lake. i hope it doesn't ruin the trout and bass fishery. Those are some great sized perch, hopefully they wont get stunted in the next few years like a lot of lakes. Thanks for posting.

Thanks...I've never fished north of the trestle before and knew it was a bit shallow. Must get weedy in the mid summer. Good to know that area has fish AND that I can just relax and fish off the trestle as well.

Great report. Are there any rental cabins on the lake? How is the access?

Glad you got to get in on the action. It's a ton of fun pulling them out of the ice one after the other!

Nice fish, but sorry to see the lake now has perch. Use to fish that lake in the 90's. It had nice, large rainbow at that time. Haven't heard much about the rainbow fishing in that lake for a while now, hope they are still nice size.

The Rainbow fishing is still excellent. Contrary to what many claim perch and rainbow fisheries can co-exist. Cascade Lake in Idaho is proof supporting a world record class Yellow Perch fishery with a Rainbow Trout fishery that blows away most WA state trout fisheries.

Perch concerns?
I wouldn't worry too much about the perch in Curlew. There should be plenty of hungry Tiger Muskies around to help curb their population.
I'm not sure how often it gets tiger plants but I believe they are still happening.

Question for the icefisherman.. has anyone been to Curlew lake in the last week and how is the ice looking? Think of going next week before the ice starts melting.

Last report is 7-8" with 3-4" of slush on top. I imagine it'll get a little slushier with the warmer temps this week but should remain safe for a while.
