Got a chance to get out on the water today, but decided to sleep in due to the cold mornings.

First cast at about 11:15AM. Got 1 small SMB in 35' of water.

Moved around. Tried shallows for a while, only little nibbles. Hit a few deep points with just light taps.

3 hours into fishing, nothing but that small smb early on. Ouch. Beautiful weather though.

Pulling away, saw some marks on another deep point. Made a few casts with dropshot. Fish on! About 1.5#. Then another. And another and another. Hooked 5 in short order. After the bite died down, I tossed a football head around. Felt a couple light taps, but it got really heavy. Set the hook and it felt like a tank. Felt heavy but not very active. Held it for a second to make sure it was a fish and not a snag, lol.

It surfaces and looked like a small salmon at a distance. Get a closer look and it's a giant squawfish! 21" @ 2.68#. Eagles will be eating well today!

Moved around some more catching several more. Even though I got several bites at all depths. All my fish were caught in 35-40' of water. Nothing big. Biggest just under 2#.

Thanks for letting me know. I spent the day chasing larches in the north cascades for a photo shoot. Yeah, this year has been a real disappointment for smb size. The bites have been as you described, like hung on the bottom, but not moving until you put the pressure on. I don't have an accurate way of measuring weight, but did you get a length on the 1.5#? Your depth of fishing is the same as mine. Might see you out next week if I don't go chasing walleye in Eastern Washington then. Do you fish on the east side of the mountains at all?

Steve, I didn't weigh or measure any bass. I only weighed that big squaw, lol.

Typically, anything around 14" will be 1#. 15-16" will be ~ 1.5-1.75#. 17" starts hitting the 2#. 18# about 3#.

I generally don't bother weighing anymore unless it's something "big". Now big can be relative. It may be big for that day if you know what I mean, lol. Once in a while, I'll weigh one just to make sure I'm guessing close enough, especially when they are all the same size it seems.

I try camp/fish in Eastern WA once a year, typically before summer starts. Wasn't able to make it this year though. It's usually at Banks or PotHoles. I want to fish Moses in the boat, but don't know of any campgrounds around there yet.

There is Cascade Campground in Moses, but I haven't tried it. There are a couple of nice weather windows this week at Potholes, so I may try to get a day in over there. Always the game of watching for clear weather with low wind, which is not a common combination.
