It was a classic fall day with periods of cool, cloudy, and wet weather mixed with glorious radiant sunshine and mirror like waters. Like many times before I found the triploid Rainbow Trout on this lake to be late risers. Once the bite started at around 8:30 AM it was consistent until I packed up and left a little after noon.
Kokanee littered the graph throughout the day and provided plenty of action but I was primarily after triploid Rainbow Trout. I've been using the new Brad's Kokanee Cut Plugs for trout of all varieties and they have quickly become my staple for trolling for these larger trout. Like their larger cousins these little superbaits can be stuffed with bait and I've found Powerbait to be highly effective and long lasting in the scent chambers. Alternatively I soaked the scent pad with garlic or anise oil.
Most of the fish were concentrated at 30-40' in 30 to 60' of water concentrating on shelves. I used 3 oz of lead with 80-120' on the line counter to reach these depths while trolling at 1.5-2.0 mph.
All in all it was a beautiful day of filming and fishing on this lightly pressured lake on the Colville Indian Reservation. If you ever make it out to fish the Grand Coulee area be sure and add this lake to your list of potential targets.
