I was headed for Wiser when I remembered the last report and how green and nasty the water was! I pulled up short and headed for Whatcom instead as I hadn't fished it since Spring.

I started down west of Strawberry Point and caught one on a spinnerbait within 10 casts in about 6 feet of water near a grass patch. I then missed two and had four follows in the next 30 minutes as I worked my way east towards Strawberry. I decided to head down and fish the other two rocky points but blanked on one and got one more on a spinnerbait on the other. The wind was picking up so I motored back north to the rows of pilings on the east side across from the launch. I missed a couple more here and caught a dink. I tried drop shot and grubs along the pilings out to 30 feet and didn't get touched. I motored over to the west side and fished my way back towards the launch. I caught one on the spinnerbait near some rocks but again, nothing by the pilings around the launch area.

At this point I just decided to go for a drive and ran about half way down the lake to the east side where the rocky shoreline has the walking trail running along it. I positioned the boat in 40 feet of water and cast a 3 inch Yamamoto grub on a 1/4oz jig head in to the shallower water by the rocks. I would lift the rod to 12 o'clock and hold it until the bait swung back to the bottom or something grabbed it. I would then reel down to 10 o'clock and lift back up to 12 and hold. I repeated this process for about half a mile I would say, eventually I switched to a 3/8oz jig head and that's when the bigger bites came. I let the wind push me for the most part and cast out in front of the boat on a 45 degree angle so I would be working towards my bait allowing it to sink and not get dragged.

I believe the wind was washing crawdads out of the rocks cause I got bit on nearly every cast! From dinks all the way up to 3 pounders! The majority of the fish were spitting up crawfish, big orange chunks of crawfish. I didn't count how many I caught but it was quite a few and I lost or missed about the same amount. Wish I would have thought of it earlier....the fish are definitely still around the deeper water and the bigger fish came from 15-25 feet. I may have to hit this one a couple more times before it closes...

Nice Fish ! Sounds like a Great Day. I may have to dig out the grubs. Really haven't used them since the early 90's but caught a lot of nice fish on them.

+1 on what you said about crawdads. I was fishing a shaky head with a MM curly roboworm. The fish spit the hook next to the boat I could see orange crawdad chunks suspended in the water. I'm gonna have to start throwing my best crawdad imitations next time and see what happens.
