Thought i'd try my luck this weekend at catching my first Salmon.
From what i've read, Pink Salmon are a great place to start for a beginner such as myself.
I received lots of helpful tips from friendly folks on this site in regards to gear, bait options, locations to fish.
With all that in mind, I was finally ready to pursue these fish.

My friend and I arrived on the Sky around 7:30am. It was pretty crowded along the shoreline where we parked so we hiked a bit up the river to find a less crowded area. We found a nice little seam of deeper water, the fish were jumping and rolling around for pretty much the entire time we were on the river in this spot (about 5 hours). Tried dick nites, buzzbombs, jigs, nothing seemed to be working. This all changed when I switched to a Pink spin and glo, with some sandshrimp on there. Received lots of strikes, successfully landed my first Salmon after about an hour. He was a nice Buck Pink Salmon. The fight took about 10 minutes on my setup, and I was able to keep the fish in the water during the hook removal so it could be safely released back into the river. About an hour later I landed another, but it spit the hook about 5 feet from shore. Would've had more if the sandshrimp I bought wasn't so brittle and provided the fish with a little more free lunch than I liked, but all in all it was a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, and hope others have some good luck with these gorgeous fish!

Congratulations on your first salmon. Just wondering...wasn't anyone using corkies and yarn or Cheaters?

Thank you! I think some people did have success with the corkies as well.

Well done. Congrats on your first pink. Cured deli shrimp will work just as well and stay on the hook much better than sandshrimp. next time you give it a try, bring both and see which one you like better.

Thank you! I will definitely give the cured deli shrimp a try next time. The bait seemed to be the key for me at least, only time I was getting any action.

I typically don't use bait anymore, for pinks i either use flies or twitching jigs almost exclusively. But i used to use bait and the deli shrimp worked better for the simple fact that it stayed on the hook better, less time spent re rigging bait= more time being spent where the fish are= more hook ups and landed fish.
