Well my son Adam and I headed up to Baker to give our luck a try at some Sockeye and camping this year. We arrived Sunday morning around 11 am and got the boat in the water and the truck parked as the camp site was still occupied. We headed over to noisy creek area and dropped our lines on the dr at 35 feet double stacked for me and only one rod for Adam as he forgot to buy his endorsement....kids.....lol. Anyway we had a few drive by's nothing stuck good. They all seem to be long line releases. We trolled for hours with nothing in the box to show for it. Headed back in at 3:30 to get camp set up and make some dinner. Made a phone call to the wife and had her buy Adam his 2 pole endorsement so he is good to go for the morning.
Woke up the next day late, well it happens right. On the water by 6 am headed back to our spot noisy creek area as this has been the go to spot for the last 3 years for us. We trolled the DR at 35 ft again and only a few drive by's. Spoke with another boat who and just landed one and they told us they were much deeper. So dropped the DR down to 50 and 55 ft and and that seem to do the trick to start catching fish on one rod my lower. A bit later Adam's rod goes off and he got a nice little koke. Reset the gear and well Adam get the calling again this time a very nice sockeye and snap......the main line snaps not sure what it caught or just had a nick in the line will never know but lost the dodger and everything. We managed to get 4 to the boat. Headed back in to camp at 3 pm happy as can be as this was my personal best 3 sockeye in one day, would of been 4 but handed the rod to Adam so he could enjoy the fun. Now boat best day 4 sockeye so a Great day on the water at Baker!!
Woke up Tuesday and headed back over to noisy creek. Started trolling all over and looked like it was going to be a slow day. After the sun hit the water 7:30 ish the bite was on!! I landed a very nice sockeye on the turn, not sure why but the turns seem to get us bit at a certain area. Later Adams lower rod starts dancing and pulls the clip after a nice fight he lands a sockeye. Little later a koke. Now it is getting hot and smokey and we decided to just go home as Adam had a doctors appt. the next day at 2 in Tacoma and did not want to push our luck with traffic.
So all in all our trip we came home with 2 kokes and 6 sockeye. Lost a few fish long release never saw them, had one snap the main line and released a few kokes. The best year for us at Baker and Adam is ready for another trip and so am I.
