Road trip from Wenatchee to Port Angeles in search of Dungeness crab with salmon on the undercard. Six hour trip wasn't too bad going over, but the freshly paved section of highway 2 east of Leavenworth, coming home after dark, was treacherous as there was no visible center line OR fog line plus thick smoke and heavy traffic in both directions.
Our trip agenda was to drop the crab pots and kill 2 hours at a time trying for salmon.
In the beginning, I thought something was wrong with the Humminbird, as it was showing depths of 2 or 3 feet far from shore. We quickly figured out it was a solid layer of jellyfish, which made trolling a challenge. Not getting accurate depth or marking fish, made for a real crapshoot. We tried jigging, but that too was blind man's bluff. Finally, I landed the boat and drove from the spit back to town for some green package frozen herring. At that point we only had a couple hours left to fish, but drift mooching a cut plug with a 2oz slip sinker got me hooked up with a hard fighting native king in the 15 lb range. The fish was released in good shape. It seems that fishing had dropped off for a while, but is coming on strong now.
I'm rating this a 4 because that fish reminded me of my youth and brought back memories of entire summers spent in a rented cabin at Hansville in the 50's. Net bounty..... 5 pounds of wonderful Dungeness meat.
